Security

One vital aspect of mail delivery process through the letterplate is a security risk, especially risk of arson, as the letterplate allows 24 hours public access to a sizeable hole in the exterior door. Police service reports that 95% of deliberate fire offences (arsons) in dwellings involve accelerants introduced through the letterplate. So letterplate (letter box) arson is an issue.

However, currently the common letterplate products for entrance doors are not tested for fire and arson performance, whereas the letterplate products for fire doors are tested for the fire performance only using UK Standards and Regulations BS 476: Pt. 20/22:1987 "Methods for determination of the fire resistance of non-load bearing elements of construction". In PAS 24:2007 the letterplate is listed among features that may influence the security of a door assembly. And yet, whenever the letterplate is mentioned in PAS 24:2007 it is specifically excluded from the test.

In practice all letterplate products, including the fire rated ones, are accessible to all and openable. For that reason these letterplate products are not helpful for the customers who want to achieve the genuine security and conformance with a number of the current UK legislations that came in force since 1987, such as Fire Safety Order 2005.
